I just ran across an event specific image that I had taken earlier this year on a sports associated web site and my simple image watermark had been cut off. Guys, the event in question cost me more than $400.00 to attend. I camped in my truck and provided for all of my meals, etc. I hoofed it around on the side of a dusty hill for three days in direct sunlight (hot). I had more than $50K in photo gear to clean and make ready each day. I have annual business expenses (license, legal, insurance, etc…), family healthcare… you get the idea. Again, I received zero compensation of any kind. Per my published comments the use of my watermarked images were free (as long as the watermark remained intact). A clean non-watermarked low resolution web optimized digital image was available for purchase for $30.00. Photography is not my third rate hobby. My efforts must generate a sustainable income in order for me to return again next time. Use the images, please. But use them with the non-obstructive watermark or pay for the clean image. Better yet, purchase a 30×40 inch professional mounted print (clean web optimized digital image is free with print) for $700.00; sign it; date it; add a few ‘sponsor me’ business cards to it; and place the image in a high traffic location where your chances of getting additional sponsorships are good. Turn your $700.00 investment in both of us into four times that in new sponsorship $$.
